travel-hoi-an-a-z-tan-ky-ancient-house-history

The house was built in 1741 and is the home of 7 generations of the Le family. In the second generation, the owner took the name Tan Ky (prosperous trade) to trade and sell agricultural products. The front of the house opens to Nguyen Thai Hoc Street to open a business store, and the back connects to the river and Bach Dang Street, which is convenient for importing goods.

At that time, Hoi An was still a busy international trading port with many Japanese, Chinese, and Western merchant ships. Therefore, the location of the house is very convenient for trading goods.

Tan Ky ancient house has suffered many floods. Especially in 1964, a downpour flooded the first floor of the house. However, the house has miraculously survived over the years. In the area selling souvenirs to tourists, you can see flood warning lines in the place.

It is not the oldest house in Hoi An, but this is one of the original ancient house models with architecture and family objects perfectly preserved for many generations. That is why it has been designated by the Ministry of Culture and Information as a “Cultural Project” in Hoi An since 1985.

Architecture of the ancient house

The house is a combination of Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese architectural styles. It is built in a unique style, including two overlapping columns, symbolizing the relationship of heaven and man, and five vertical columns like five fingers, representing the five elements in nature.

The house possesses the typical tubular architecture of the old town. There are no windows anywhere in the house. The house’s unique light comes from a space called the skylight. However, when entering this ancient house, there is no feeling of stuffiness at all.

Wood is the primary material to build the house. There are also stone and floor tiles. The rocks were brought from Thanh Hoa province. The floor tiles are from Bat Trang pottery village. By this construction and materials, the house becomes cool in summer and warm in winter. The remarkable thing is that somebody built it entirely without using any nails, but it still maintains its natural position until now.

Objects displayed in the house

The builders of this house are skillful artisans from the famous Kim Bong village in Quang Nam province. It would help if you also took time to visit this village when travel Hoi An. All motifs, patterns, and textures in the house carry the meaning and message of Eastern philosophy.

The ancient house of Tan Ky still preserves many horizontal paintings, such as “Teaching children and grandchildren to keep virtue for the next generation); “The mind is always calm” (keep the mind always quiet). The first area in the house is where artifacts and sailboats are displayed – the symbol of Hoi An Port 400 years ago.

The house currently houses the lacquered canvas “Bach Dieu” (One Hundred Birds). Archaeologists consider this to be unique in Vietnam. It is written in 100 letters, each letter representing a bird taking flight.

When entering the house, you can see the elaborately carved glossy black bed or the exquisitely designed flower vase base. Among the many artifacts in the ancient place, the “Eight Confucius” is indispensable, a priceless treasure.

The price is associated with ancient traces of Confucius. It advises people to restrain their behaviors, keep themselves in a neutral state, and not be overly active.
